The National Center for Sustainable Agriculture Research and Development (Estidamah) organized a workshop titled "Research and Innovation for Sustainable Wheat Production and Food Security in Saudi Arabia," bringing together leading researchers and agricultural experts to highlight the latest practices and innovative technologies that support sustainable wheat production and improve productivity.
The workshop examined the current state of wheat production in the Kingdom, as well as the key challenges and opportunities for its development. Discussions also covered the role of genetic resources in developing high-yielding, climate-resilient wheat varieties, in addition to the application of advanced technologies to enhance production efficiency and optimize agricultural resource management.
Director General of Estidamah, Dr. Khalid bin Marshoud Al-Rohaily, emphasized that research and innovation are fundamental to ensuring the sustainability of wheat production and advancing the Kingdom’s food security objectives. He noted that digital technologies have significantly enhanced agricultural monitoring and data analysis, enabling more informed decision-making, improving crop management efficiency, and strengthening production forecasting capabilities.
He added that adopting modern technologies also contributes to improving the efficiency of agricultural supply chains and maintaining product quality, thereby supporting the sustainability of food resources and enhancing the sector’s readiness to address future challenges.
The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the importance of stronger collaboration among relevant stakeholders and continued investment in agricultural research and development to improve production efficiency and advance Saudi Arabia’s sustainability and food security goals.
