The National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture (“Estidamah”) organized, at its headquarters in Riyadh, a workshop entitled “Smart Irrigation and Water-Use Efficiency in the Agricultural Sector,” with the participation of a number of specialists in water, agriculture, and modern technologies.
The workshop was held as part of the national efforts leading up to “Year of Water 2027,” with the aim of enhancing the exchange of expertise and discussing solutions and technologies that support improved irrigation efficiency and the rationalization of water consumption, thereby contributing to the sustainability of water resources and agricultural production in the Kingdom.
The Director General of the Center, Dr. Khalid bin Marshoud Al-Ruhaili, emphasized the importance of harnessing research, innovation, and modern technologies to address challenges related to water resources. He noted that every drop of water represents value and an opportunity to enhance the sustainability of the agricultural sector and achieve higher productivity with fewer resources.
The workshop addressed a number of specialized topics, including crop water requirements, partnerships supporting water innovation, water-use efficiency and its role in advancing agricultural sustainability, and smart irrigation applications and solutions. It also explored the use of data and artificial intelligence in water resource management, modern technologies for improving water-use efficiency in greenhouses, and the feasibility of AI-enabled irrigation systems.
The workshop provided a platform for exchanging expertise and knowledge and discussing opportunities to leverage modern technologies and innovative solutions to advance agricultural practices. These efforts support the Kingdom’s objectives of conserving water resources, improving production efficiency, and enhancing the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
