The Jazan Branch of the National Center for Sustainable Agriculture Research and Development (Estidamah), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), organized the "Community Seed Bank in Jazan" workshop as part of efforts to conserve plant genetic resources and promote agricultural sustainability, in partnership with Reef Al-Ahlia Foundation.
The workshop aimed to empower farmers by supporting the conservation and exchange of locally adapted seed varieties with agricultural and economic value, contributing to the preservation of agricultural biodiversity and local crop varieties suited to different environmental conditions.
The two-day workshop began with theoretical sessions introducing the concept of community seed banks and their role in conserving and managing plant genetic resources. The second day featured practical field activities, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience in seed conservation, documentation, and exchange, while applying scientific knowledge in agricultural practice.
Participants underscored the importance of establishing and expanding community seed banks as an effective tool for strengthening food security and ensuring sustainable agricultural production through the conservation of plant genetic resources for future generations.
The workshop also presented a number of experiences and best practices in seed conservation, documentation, and exchange, and discussed ways to increase the participation of farmers and local communities in preserving agricultural biodiversity.
It further highlighted the importance of collaboration among research institutions, development organizations, and farmers to safeguard local agricultural heritage and make effective use of plant genetic resources in support of sustainable agricultural development.
