Background

Bell pepper is a valuable greenhouse crop that might have large benefits from being grown in a well-controlled air-conditioned greenhouse. Estidamah has four such greenhouse compartments. In 2017, the first experiment was carried out to get some benchmarks and figures for red and yellow pepper cultivars.

Experimental History

  • Varieties: Red - Clavesol (RZ), Yellow - Saramba (RZ)
  • Seed Sowing: 21 December 2016
  • Transplanting: 26 January 2017
  • Plant Density: 2.5 plants per m²
  • Harvesting Period: 27 March 2017 – 12 September 2017  (24 weeks)
  • Number of Harvests: 25

Goals

This project aims on getting representative data for pepper growing in a closed greenhouse environment. The results were analyzed in terms of production and water use efficiency.

The main factors studied are:

Two pepper cultivars (Yellow and red)

Result overview
  • Yellow pepper was producing 20.4 kg/m² while red pepper 23.8 kg/m²
Clear Glass Production
Yellow 20.4 kg/m², from which 75% good
Red 23.8 kg/m², from which 86% good

  • Good fruit quality standards for both cultivars.
