Water Use Efficiency of Tomato in Different Greenhouse Technologies

Background

Water use efficiency is defined as the amount of water used to produce one kilogram of product. So, the lower amount used of water per kg of product, the better technology is performing in saving water. A better water use efficiency could be obtained by a higher production per m² or a lower water use per m². When going from plastic greenhouses to Med-Tech greenhouses, the water use efficiency is improved by same decrement of the water consumption for cooling and some increment of the production. For H-Tech, the air conditioning-controlled greenhouses, production can be improved more, but what’s more important, water consumption for cooling is eliminated and the water transpired by the crop is largely recuperated.
